Yelena Isinbayeva has played the “misunderstanding” card on Friday when she sought to defend her anti-gay comments that caused a stir at the world athletics championships in Moscow on Thursday.
Isinbayeva, who is one of Russia’s most popular sportswomen and regularly gives interviews in English, caused international uproar on Friday morning when she spoke out in favour of her country’s recently-adopted law that bans some aspects of the promotion of homosexuality.
Isinbayeva, who has now faced calls for her resignation as an Olympic youth ambassador, had been asked for her views after several Swedish athletes had painted their nails in rainbow colours in support of the gay movement. French actor Gerard Depardieu, who has threatened to forsake his homeland for Russia to avoid massive new taxes, has travelled to the central Russian region of Mordovia where he may next hang his hat.
As is his way, President Putin had sexy costumed women greet his new buddy Gerard Depardieu. The long legged Mordovian babes performed a folk dance on the tarmac as he arrived in the capital Saransk on Sunday and was served blini.
