The Melbourne inner-city suburb of Richmond is renowned for Victoria Street, the strip that helped popularise Asian food and culture in Australia’s most cosmopolitan city.
It is also a location in which the use and dealing of heroin has been concentrated for more than 2 decades, littered with syringes, dealers brazenly hawking their poison around the bustling food and grocery precinct, locals are out of patience.
However, those trying to cope with the ongoing drug epidemic are on the verge of seeking the State Governments go ahead for Melbourne’s first SIS, Safe Injecting Site.
In 2013, researchers from the respected Burnet Institute completed a study that pointed to an SIS as a relevant resolution to this appalling situation. The ‘North Richmond Public Injecting Impact Study’ was undertaken in collaboration with the Yarra Drug and Health Forum, City of Yarra and North Richmond Community Health Centre. The research suggested that setting up a facility offering 24-hour access to sterile injecting equipment would be one of the areas only hopes of quelling the ongoing “widespread, frequent and highly visible” illicit drug use :: Read the full article »»»»

A US student has been sentenced to 18 months in prison for hacking the online accounts of Miss Teen USA and more than 100 other women in several countries and threatening to publish nude photos of them.
Jared James Abrahams surrendered in September to FBI agents probing so-called “sextortion” cases, in which he made demands in return for agreeing not to release the pictures. The investigation involved multiple victims in California, Canada, Moldova and Russia
20-year-old Abrahams, who hacked into as many as 150 online accounts and forced victims to engage in Skype sessions in which he convinced two teenagers to undress, made a plea deal with prosecutors in November.

A veterans hospital police official charged with conspiring to kidnap, torture and kill women as part of the so-called “cannibal cop” case is expected to plead guilty in New York this week, a court filing showed.
Richard Meltz, 65, of Nashua, New Hampshire, is set to enter a plea on Thursday, just weeks before he and two other accused co-conspirators are scheduled to go on trial.
The case grew out of an investigation into New York police officer Gilberto Valle, who was convicted last year of a plot to kidnap, cook and eat women. Meltz is charged with conspiracy to commit kidnapping.
His attorney, Peter Brill, did not immediately respond to a request for comment :: Read the full article »»»»

Australian Media, over the past couple of weekends, have highlighted the nations problem with alcohol. Headlines such as “Take Back the Streets, Two Nights of Living Hell and Police stabbed in Drunken Brawl” splashed across the front pages of the nations newspapers.
In New South Wales the Premier and Police Commissioner gave a press conference after a weekend of alcohol-fuelled violence which saw 540 arrests in one weekend. Police claim the arrests are evidence that messages about sensible drinking are not getting through, and that simply putting more officers on the street will not solve the problem.
However, the weekends arrests only came after a national police crackdown on drinking – Operation Unite last weekend, Rushmore this weekend – the reality is police operations are entirely symbolic, alcohol and drug fueled violence is an ongoing reality in Australia, not a one-off weekend of over-exuberant drinking.
A quick skip through the nations newspapers confirms the problem is national, and just like the management of the problem – alcoholism – no overbearing solution has been offered for what looks like a nation of overdrinkers.
If only it were that simple. The latest trend for revellers is a dangerous cocktail of alcohol and ice. The combination of a drug that increases stupidity – alcohol – and an illicit substance – methamphetamine – that causes uncontrollable anger and aggression has taken a solid hold in the Australian party scene :: Read the full article »»»»

A Sydney brothel owner who prostituted a 14-year-old girl has been given a suspended jail sentence and a good behaviour bond. Jennifer Weatherstone, 50, was convicted of two counts of causing a child to participate in child prostitution in 2011.
The court heard the teenager, known as “Charlie”, went to police on her first night working at the brothel after she was asked to have unprotected sex with a 75-year-old man. She said she’d run away from home and claimed Weatherstone had offered her a job without asking her age.
Weatherstone, who owns the Sparkling Chandeliers brothel in Sydney’s notorious Kings Cross, disputed the girls claims, telling the court she thought the girl looked least 19, that she’d found a Facebook page which listed the girls age as 24 and that the girl had first presented herself drunk.
Some would argue that in handing down a suspended sentence, the Judge issued an overtly light punishment for such a heinous crime, the maximum sentence for child prostitution is 14 years in prison :: Read the full article »»»»

Australia’s First ‘Revenge Porn’ Law
Australia’s most livable state, Victoria has modified existing sexting legislation to outlaw “revenge porn,” making it the first on the continent-down-under to criminalize the new form of cyber harassment.
The forthcoming law will make it an offense to take part in “non-consensual sexting;” i.e., deliberately sending explicit pictures of someone that isn’t yourself. Penalties for those who break the new law haven’t been finalised.
The laws have been through several drafts, including amendments added to protect minors – who post nude photos to one another – from being hit with child pornography charges.
Revenge porn first kicked off in 2010 with the launch of isanyoneup.com, a submission based porn site started by Hunter Moore. The site was a massive hit, dragging in hundreds of thousand of dollars in advertising revenue and attracting 30 million pageviews a month :: NSFW!
