A former chemistry professor has been arrested by Chinese police on suspicion of selling a drug recipe to a gang which cooked up synthetic narcotics, state media reports.
The 50-year-old former academic surnamed Lu had “a set of recipes for producing methcathinone”, a drug similar to methamphetamine, which he provided to dealers.
Amphetamine labs are growing at an alarming rate, a Chinese police raid on the house of two methcathinone dealers in 2011 uncovered a pile of 80 million yuan, $AU13 million, in cash.
In Australia Amphetamine arrests have nearly double in past five years, according to Crime Commission’s Illicit Drug Data Report. Trade workers and those in the hospitality industry are among the biggest users of the drug according to an analysis of national drug data.

19 August 2013: Chinese authorities are investigating a policeman who grabbed a seven-month-old baby girl from her parents and threw her on the ground, fracturing her skull, according to state media.
Guo Zengxi, a policeman from the central city of Linzhou, in Henan province, was on his way to a karaoke bar after drinking with friends one evening last month when he saw a man holding a baby accompanied by his wife.

Spanish and French authorities say they have dismantled a human trafficking ring responsible for smuggling Chinese citizens into Europe and the United States, charging up to €50,000/$AU70,000 per person.
A total of 75 suspects including two “main operatives” based in Barcelona and the kingpin based in China were arrested. The well organised smuggling ring disguised their illegal Chinese migrants as tourists or students, regularly changing the routes taken from China, as well as the travel documents used, “changed constantly according to the successes and failures of previous trips… or in order to prevent discovery of the traffickers.” a statement from authorities said.
