Bill Gates has made the overtly bold prediction that there “will be almost no poor countries left by 2035”. In the sixth annual letter published by the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, Mr Gates says that there are already clear signs of progress toward this end.
“By almost any measure, the world is better than it has ever been,” he wrote in the letter. “People are living longer, healthier lives. Many nations that were aid recipients are now self-sufficient.”
Countries once considered poor, such as China, India, Brazil and even Botswana, now have growing economies, he says. In Africa more broadly, life expectancy has risen since the 1960s despite the HIV epidemic.
More children are going to school and fewer people are hungry and where health conditions have improved, birth-rates have declined, the letter states :: Read the full article »»»»
It’s no secret, I’ve dated a stinker, a wonderfilled woman – full of talent and wit – who had the misfortune of suffering from halitosis, a condition that turned my bog-standard-bipolarized-blond-bird into a slinky-stink-bomb. Brooksy’s condition was initiated by a specific combination of food, give this girl a combo of garlic and red wine and you’d have to stand five feet away to avoid the pong, no joke, possibly THE most rancid smell my nose has ever been exposed to!
Most of us have had a similar experience, an outwardly gorgeous buddy who turns our nose. So were does the stink come from; diet, perspiration or bad personal hygiene, are we truly what we eat? ::
Alternative medicines like Ayurveda and Homeopathy reckon that toxins in our body – from impure or improperly digested food – can cause our body odour and breath to pong. According to mainstream medicine and science however, the causes of bad body odour are not yet fully understood.
Modern medicine says that bodily smells are caused by numerous factors working in combination, including the chemicals in sweat reacting with bacteria that have made a home on our skin. And while science is busily looking at our diet, conclusions are currently sparse. It’s easy to imagine that what we eat might sneak out through perspiration :: Read the full article »»»»
Post election drama is a given, the shear number of words spoken dictates that multiple cases of foot n mouth will have occurred. Taking the election campaign too seriously is simply asking for trouble.
This in mind, spear a thought for Georgia congressman Paul Broun, who – during his campaign – attacked the theory of evolution found himself with an unlikely opponent in Tuesday’s US election, when 4,000 voters in one county cast write-in ballots for the 19th century father of evolution, British naturalist Charles Darwin.
In a September 27 speech, Paul Broun, a physician and member of the US House of Representatives Science, Space and Technology Committee, called evolution and the Big Bang Theory, “lies straight from the pit of hell“.
Mr Broun, a Republican, had no opposition in the general election, a University of Georgia plant biology professor, Jim Leebens-Mack, and others started a write-in campaign for Darwin, the father of the theory of evolution.
Mr Broun received 16,980 votes in Athens-Clarke County, home of the University of Georgia, Mr Broun’s undergraduate alma mater. The long dead biologist copped a nudge over 4000 :: Read the full article »»»»
The Islamic state of Iran has inflicted new rules upon it’s already rule laden female population, the latest round of can’t-do’sincludes the banning of female university students from studying 77 subjects in Iran have come into effect as the nation’s academic year kicked off on Saturday. The Iranian Government has not given any official reason for the restrictions that apply to more than 30 universities.
Banned courses include Nuclear Physics, Computer Science and English Literature.
US based Human Rights Watch said in a statement that the restrictions extended a creeping “Islamicisation” of Iran’s universities that have been imposed under president Mahmoud Ahmadinejad.
A much smaller number of courses were also barred to men on some campuses, including studies in history, linguistics, literature, sociology and philosophy. Iran’s President dismissed Western criticism, saying: “The angrier Western media gets, the more we realise we are moving in the right direction.” :: Read the full article »»»»
