Australia’s latest Prime Minister – Kevin Rudd – has slammed the door on asylum seekers attempting to enter the country by boat. Mr Rudd has confirmed a deal that will see asylum seekers sent to Papua New Guinea – PNG – for assessment, and if they are found to be genuine refugees, they’ll be resettled there.
PNG’s prime minister Peter O’Neill joined Mr Rudd in formally unveiling the plan in Brisbane on Friday. Mr Rudd says those found not to be refugees will be sent back to their own nations or a third country.
Mr Rudd says the deal with PNG is aimed at stopping “the scourge of people smuggling”. If nothing else the move is likely to polarize opinion on Australia’s treatment of refugees :: Read the full article »»»»

We all remember the shock late last year when young Pakistani girl, Malala Yousafzai, was shot – in broad daylight – by a Taliban assassin. The teenager recovered, resettled in the UK and then heroically addressed the United Nations on her 16th birthday – this month – vowing not to be silenced by terrorists.
Nine months after a gunman shot her on a bus in Pakistan’s Swat Valley for demanding education for girls, Malala Yousafzai received multiple standing ovations at the United Nations Youth Assembly in New York. She addressed nearly 1,000 students from around the world and her speech was immediately hailed for its power.
Bravely, Ms Yousafzai showed the attack on her had done nothing to dim her passion for girls’ education. She has not returned to Pakistan, due to persistent Taliban threats against her.
In what can only be described as a surprising turnaround, a Taliban commander has written to Ms Yousafzai, saying he regretted her shooting last year by militants and has urged her to come home :: Read the full article »»»»

As the world becomes more liberal and accepting of difference, charismatic Russian President Vladimir Putin has signed a controversial bill – punishing people for homosexual propaganda – into law, according to an official publication over the weekend. The new law introduces fines of up to 5,000 rubles/$AU165 for citizens who disseminate information “directed at forming non-traditional sexual setup” in minors or which may cause a “distorted understanding” that gay and heterosexual relations are “socially equivalent”, the publication showed.
Critics and civil libertarians have called the bill homophobic, saying it’s “so vaguely defined that it would inevitably be used arbitrarily against gays,” stirring hate crimes in the country.
However, the bill sailed through the parliament. Mr Putin had promised in advance that he would sign the bill.
The fines go up to as much as 200,000 rubles/$AU6,600 for officials if such “propaganda” is disseminated through the media or internet. Foreigners will not only be fined but face administrative arrest up to 15 days and eventual deportation, the law says. Organisations face fines of up to 1 million rubles and shutdown of their activity for 90 days :: Read the full article »»»»

A 75-year-old Japanese man died after 25 hospitals refused to admit him to their emergency rooms 36 times over two hours, an official said. The man, who lived alone in a city north of Tokyo, called an ambulance after suffering breathing problems at his home in January.
Paramedics rushed to his house but were told in turn by all 25 hospitals in the area that they could not accept the man because they did not have enough doctors or any free beds, a local city official said, adding some institutions were contacted more than once.
The ambulance eventually made a 20 minute drive to a hospital in neighbouring Ibaraki prefecture, but the man was pronounced dead shortly after arrival. The cause of death has not been made public :: Read the full article »»»»

Our distaste for child abuse of any form has been well penned on these pages, it now seems that the interweb is catching up! Australia’s first public sex offenders register will go online later today, publishing the names and faces of known child sex offenders in Western Australia.
The names and faces of about 50 paedophiles will be published on the State Government website, which is being set up in fulfilment of a 2008 election pledge.
The launch is being closely watched by other states, but there are concerns it will prompt vigilantism and cases of mistaken identity.
The website will provide information on some of the state’s most dangerous and repeat child sex offenders, including their photos, names and the suburbs in which they live, although it will not give out specific addresses :: Read the full article »»»»

A 14-year-old Pakistani girl who campaigned for children’s rights is fighting for her life after being shot in the head on her school bus by a cowardly Taliban gunman. Malala Yousafzai had campaigned for girls’ education and was nominated for an international peace prize. Malala Yousafzai won international recognition for highlighting Taliban atrocities in Swat with a blog for the BBC three years ago, when Islamist militants burned girls’ schools and terrorized the valley.
Malala Yousafzai was shot in broad daylight in Mingora, the main town of the Swat valley, raising serious questions about security more than three years after the army claimed to have crushed a Taliban insurgency there. Malala was flown to the north-western city of Peshawar where a team of senior doctors said she was in a critical condition. Two other girls were injured in the attack.
Taliban spokesman Ehsanullah Ehsan told AFP the Islamist group carried out the attack after repeatedly warning Malala to stop speaking out against them :: Read the full article »»»»
