Australia’s Government has announced it will legalise the growing of cannabis for medicinal purposes.
Health Minister Sussan Ley says the Government wants to give people suffering from debilitating illnesses access to all of the most effective medical treatments, including medical cannabis.
The minister said she had been moved by stories of people who get relief from the currently restricted drug, sometimes legally imported but not always. However, Ms Ley said the legalisation was only about medicinal cannabis, not recreational use.
“This is not a debate about legalisation of cannabis. This is not about illicit drugs. This is not a product you smoke. This has nothing to do with that,” Ms Ley said. “Most commonly the product is an oil or a tincture that you put on your skin.”
A progressive government in Victoria looks to have that state as the nation’s first onboard, the state Government plans to embark on a cannabis cultivation trial, based on the recommendations of a report by the Victorian Law Reform Commission :: Read the full article »»»»

Australia’s First ‘Revenge Porn’ Law
Australia’s most livable state, Victoria has modified existing sexting legislation to outlaw “revenge porn,” making it the first on the continent-down-under to criminalize the new form of cyber harassment.
The forthcoming law will make it an offense to take part in “non-consensual sexting;” i.e., deliberately sending explicit pictures of someone that isn’t yourself. Penalties for those who break the new law haven’t been finalised.
The laws have been through several drafts, including amendments added to protect minors – who post nude photos to one another – from being hit with child pornography charges.
Revenge porn first kicked off in 2010 with the launch of isanyoneup.com, a submission based porn site started by Hunter Moore. The site was a massive hit, dragging in hundreds of thousand of dollars in advertising revenue and attracting 30 million pageviews a month :: NSFW! Australia’s latest Prime Minister – Kevin Rudd – has slammed the door on asylum seekers attempting to enter the country by boat. Mr Rudd has confirmed a deal that will see asylum seekers sent to Papua New Guinea – PNG – for assessment, and if they are found to be genuine refugees, they’ll be resettled there.
PNG’s prime minister Peter O’Neill joined Mr Rudd in formally unveiling the plan in Brisbane on Friday. Mr Rudd says those found not to be refugees will be sent back to their own nations or a third country.
Mr Rudd says the deal with PNG is aimed at stopping “the scourge of people smuggling”. If nothing else the move is likely to polarize opinion on Australia’s treatment of refugees :: Read the full article »»»»
