A Canadian man’s message in a bottle honouring his promise to write to a woman named Mary has washed ashore in Croatia 28 years after it was written. Matea Medak Rezic, a 23-year-old kite surfer, found the half-broken bottle while clearing debris from a beach at the mouth of the Neretva river in the southern Adriatic.
She told Croatian newspaper Dubrovack Vjesnik she nearly threw the bottle away before spotting the wet paper inside.
Ms Rezik posted a photo of the letter to her Facebook page, she said she hoped to find out what happened to the pair.
“I picked up the bottle and I then realised that there was a letter,” she said ::::
Message in a Bottle! From Canada to the Neretva River estuary in 28 years!!
The message was from Jonathon in the Canadian province of Nova Scotia, which lies on Canada’s eastern coast.
“Mary, you really are a great person. I hope we can keep in correspondence. I said I would write. Your friend always, Jonathon, Nova Scotia, 1985,” the message said.
It is not known where Mary is from, or how the two knew each other. Jonathon’s identity is also unknown.
Ms Rezik posted a photo of the letter to her Facebook account and said she hopes to find out what happened to the pair.
If the bottle was sent from in Nova Scotia, it would have travelled about 6,000 kilometres across the Atlantic Ocean before likely entering the Mediterranean Sea between southern Spain and northern Morocco.
It would have then drifted up the Adriatic Sea before washing up on the beach.
